Academic curriculum

After an exploratory year in Year 8, students study eight subjects in Year 9 and seven subjects in Years 10, 11 and 12.
Introducing Australian curriculum in 2012 in line with the Education Queensland Curriculum Framework, continues to implement the Essential Learnings in all other curriculum areas. Year 10 is a year when students are offered programs most appropriate to prepare them for Years 11 and 12.
As well as traditional Senior Academic Subjects, the school offers a range of choices in the Senior courses to suit a range of interests and abilities.
Assessment is continuous and school-based; there are no external exams. The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is issued by the (QSA) Queensland Studies Authority if students have reached the required academic level. In Year 11, students will begin banking credits towards achieving their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Behaviour management program

Our Responsible Behaviour Plan (PDF 1 268KB) Program is designed to monitor individual behaviour, and address issues quickly. Each teacher is involved, with each Head of Department responsible for monitoring four RAS groups.

Promoting the positive

At North, we are very conscious to acknowledge positive student behaviour. Public recognition is given to individuals and student groups who are making a positive contribution to the school.

Supportive environment / student management

The student-teacher relationship is one of mutual respect and understanding. Each student has an individual case manager who monitors progress. We place great importance on developing strong co-operative partnerships with parents. The school ‘Responsible Behaviour Plan’ and a copy of Education Queensland’s ‘Code of Student Behaviour’ will be provided to all new enrolments.  To ensure the safety of students and property, items such as liquid paper, aerosol cans, mobile phones, nikko pens, CD/MP3/IPod or alike, valuable items etc. should not be brought to school.

Subject structure

In the Junior School, many subject classes are structured according to ability. This then allows very capable students to be extended, while students who may struggle with class work are provided with the required support. This assistance may be through group work, or individual.

RAS Program

Our Relationships and Self Program (RAS) is a well developed course over the six year levels. Students from years 7 to 9, and 10 to 12 form RAS groups of approximately 25 students, and stay with this group for the 6 years, gaining leadership opportunities at each year level. The RAS teacher generally remains the same for the 6 years, developing a close relationship with each student. The RAS teacher marks attendance rolls, collects notes and is the first person students can talk to if they have a concern. The RAS group meets each day, and once a week to complete a program that involves many activities.
